The coach who built a boxing gym from one bag

He retired with a damaged shoulder, one heavy bag and a rented courtyard. Fifteen years later his corner has produced state medallists and steadier lives.

The first gym was a mango tree with a bag on it. Boys came because it was free and stayed because the coach watched every jab like it was a title fight. Fifteen years on, the courtyard has a roof, a ring made from bus tyres and rope, and a wall of photographs.

His coaching is two-thirds footwork and one-third life administration. He tracks school marks alongside sparring notes and has a standing rule: report cards before ring cards. Several medallists on his wall will tell you the rule mattered more than the medals.

Equipment arrives by adoption. Old gloves are re-stitched by a cobbler who takes payment in tea. A former student who now works security sends one new bag a year, always unannounced, always without a note.

Ask about his own career and he shows the shoulder's scar without drama. 'The sport gave me this and everything else,' he says, wrapping a twelve-year-old's hands with the gentleness of a man who knows exactly how much these hands might someday carry.
